![]() Working with Pie Dough – If you haven’t made pie dough before, be sure to read through my post on Perfect Pie Dough before beginning – it will hopefully save you from making some common pie mistakes before you even begin!.Make the salted caramel sauce according to my recipe here. Gluten-free – If you’re looking for a gluten-free alternative, there are some great gluten-free blogs but I am not an expert in gluten-free pies by any means!.You can also use that in the caramel sauce, and I’ve been told that coconut milk works as a sub for the heavy cream. Dairy-free – I haven’t made pie crust with dairy-free butter sticks, but it should theoretically work.All-purpose flour – All-purpose flour is best for the crust.Butter – I always use salted buter for the best flavor, but feel free to use unsalted butter if you prefer.The tart apples help balance the sweetness of the honeycrisp apples and caramel. I used a combination of honeycrisp and granny smith. Use any good baking apple like honeycrisp, pink lady, golden delicious, or granny smith apples. Best Apples – Don’t use soft apples like McIntosh as they’ll become soggy in the pie.This recipe can easily be doubled and baked in a 9 x 13-inch pan.Cool completely before cutting into squares.Bake in preheated oven for 40-42 minutes or until the top is a light golden brown.Combine cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl and sprinkle over crumb topping. Pour apple filling over the dough, and crumble the remaining dough over the apple layer.Press 1/2 of the dough mixture evenly into prepared baking dish.In a small mixing bowl, whisk together egg and vanilla bean paste until combined. Add the egg mixture to coarse crumb mixture and mix (you may want to use your hands) to bring the dough together. Add cold cubed butter and using a fork or a pastry cutter, cut mixture together until it resembles coarse crumbs. In a medium bowl whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.Pour dry mixture over apples and toss until evenly coated. In a separate bowl, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and apple pie spice. Add lemon juice and vanilla and toss to coat. Place diced apples in a large mixing bowl.Lightly grease an 8x8 inch baking dish (also line with parchment and grease if you'd like to lift bars out easier). ![]() Bake in the preheated oven until the top is a light golden brown. To finish off the prepping, just crumble the remaining dough over the apple layer, and sprinkle over the crumb topping. Once the dough mixture is prepped, press half of it into the prepared baking dish and pour your apple filling over the dough. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the egg and vanilla bean paste until combined, and add the egg mixture to the coarse crumb mixture and mix to bring the dough together. Next, in a medium bowl whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt, then add cold cubed butter and, cut the mixture together until it resembles coarse crumbs. Pour the dry mixture over apples and toss until evenly coated and set aside. In a separate bowl, you’ll whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and apple pie spice. Preheat your oven and place diced apples in a large mixing bowl then add a little lemon juice and vanilla and toss to coat.
